September Professional Development Topic

Our September program will examine the complex topic of ethics and ethical dilemmas, "without the sermon."  The focus will be on how to decide what to do when what is "the right thing" is neither easy nor clear.  Ethical dilemmas often involve the clash of principles—when adhering to one principle—such as loyalty—means compromising another principle—such as confidentiality.  Dilemmas often arise when the "means" to achieving a beneficial "end" are not very attractive.  The first part of the program will focus generally on the topic of ethics and will outline five different approaches to ethical decision-making.  The second half will give us some insights into how to handle the strong feelings that any real-world discussion of ethics tends to trigger, and also we will discuss in small groups a specific purchasing case example or two.
